As always, none of these reflect Apollo corporate policy or positions but are the views of the author alone. All are drawn from frequent visits abroad, in various official and non-official capacities, over the past year and from conversations, insights, and analyses provided by observers with a far keener sense of what is happening in the world around us. These caveats aside, we hope that they will provide many of you with some food for thought as your companies plan their business operations, investment, and travel for the coming year. SEVEN POTENTIAL “FLASH POINTS” No one last year would have predicted the turmoil in the Middle East since January 2011 which has seen the overthrow of four leaders who collectively had ruled their countries for a staggering 129 years in all (Ben Ali in Tunisia: 24 years; Mubarak in Egypt: 30 years; Saleh in Yemen: 33 years; Qadhafi in Libya: 42 years). The same “surprise” usually accompanies all other New Year’s predictions about forthcoming … Continue reading →

Two years ago, when Medline produced the original Pink Glove Dance video to raise breast cancer awareness, little did they know that it would take on a life of its own. The video has since generated more 13 million views on YouTube and inspired countless pink glove dance videos and events around the world. This year, with the continued interest in the videos, Medline decided to host an online nationwide competition to find the best Pink Glove Dance video. Hospitals, nursing homes, schools and anyone in the U.S. and Canada who wants to organize a group of people, can produce and submit their own Pink Glove Dance video. Over the past year, Western Connecticut Health Network has undergone tremendous change. The network came together as a compilation of two hospitals, a physician network and numerous other entities all operating as one network. This past year is also the beginning of our expansion project that will take several years to complete. All of these changes exemplify our commitment to growth, with and for the needs of the communities we serve. Both of the network hospitals have a strong commitment to breast cancer. They both offer dedicated breast care programs, and New Milford … Continue reading →

THE MEANING OF 9/11 On Sunday, almost every adult American will at some point stop a moment to remember the horrific scenes of 9/11 and to reflect on the decade that has followed. For many, these have not been good years. We remain engaged in two wars that are direct out growths of the hijacking of four commercial aircraft on that fateful morning; The U.S. economy is still reeling from the impact of a serious recession and appears on the cusp of a double dip; The housing market has gone bust; The national budget has gone from being a robust $220 billion in the black in FY01 to nearly $1.5 trillion in the red in FY11; Retirement savings have withered and disappeared; Unemployment and under-employment are at staggeringly high limits; Our once stellar government-sponsored space program has effectively been shelved; The widely vaunted “American Century” appears to be essentially over with resurgent countries, such as the self-styled “BRICS” (Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa), plotting behind our back to ensure that this remains the case NOT ALL IS ‘DOOM AND GLOOM’ And, yet, not all is doom and gloom. The mastermind of “al-Qa’ida“, Usama bin Ladin, is dead, after … Continue reading →

Apollo Security President George Butson and the entire organization congratulate Ryan LaFleur, Vice President of Healthcare Services, on his new position as Director, Safety, Security, and Emergency Management at Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut. It is with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to Ryan after 12 plus years with Apollo. Ryan has been our best resource and our biggest contributor to our success in expanding our Healthcare security operations. Ryan’s extensive contacts in the security industry have benefited our entire organization with new business opportunities at several key corporate accounts too. During Ryan’s tenure as Director of Security for Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Institute, he developed numerous security programs that dramatically improved the security of the institution. Ryan’s customer service program gained the highest marks of any hospital in New York City. While at Lenox Hill, Ryan doggedly pursued Federal and State grants on behalf of the Hospital and secured nearly ¾ of a million dollars in government funds. As Ryan stated, “If Uncle Sam is going to give out money, Lenox Hill is getting their fair share.” It did not take long for the New York Healthcare security industry to recognize Ryan’s capabilities as … Continue reading →
